Time to Play Ball! Junior Giants Play Ball Lunch

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (again)…let’s Play Ball! Our beloved San Francisco Giants are ready for a new season and we have a tradition of kicking off baseball season at the annual Junior Giants Play Ball Lunch!

Our tradition of attending this incredible event started over ten years ago when our then-Board Chair, Cleopatra Vaughns, introduced us to the Junior Giants program and invited us to join her at this special lunch. After Mrs. Vaughns passed away in 2007, we’ve honored her legacies to both The City Club and the Giants Community Fund by continuing to support this wonderful organization at this annual event each Spring.

This year’s event was exceptional! Held at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, we enjoyed a reception and the panoramic views of beautiful San Francisco from the 46th Floor at the Cityscape Lounge, while getting autographs from some of our team’s bests – Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, Hunter Pence, and Buster Posey.

The lunch program following the reception is always great fun, and the perfect way to kick off the start of a new season. Each year we learn more and more about this awe-inspiring community program, and we always enjoy hearing first-hand accounts of how valuable the program is from participants of Junior Giants programs from all over California, and parts of Oregon and Nevada. This year, we had the pleasure of having Giants infielder Kelby Tomlinson as a guest at our table, along with a 4-year old Junior Giant – who was the real star of the show!

And now, it’s time to officially PLAY BALL! Wishing our boys the best of luck out there this year!

Congratulations to the Giants Community Fund for another incredibly successful Play Ball Lunch, raising over $475,000 at this year’s event!

About the Junior Giants:

Summer Speakeasy

Our Speakeasy events have always been a big hit with our Members…these evenings are just so much fun! Just add Summertime and the fun is kicked up a notch. A delicious, BBQ-themed menu, hot new whiskeys to sample, and this time, we had the pleasure of two different cigar experiences.

Cigar roller

First – Master Cuban Cigar Roller – and good friend of The City Club – Antonio Cortado was here rolling six different types of cigars for our guests. They were able to watch Antonio create them – he would question their cigar preferences, and then produce a hand-rolled cigar that was best suited to them – very cool!

cigars

And second – we had Ian Reith in the house, the founder of Cubo Cigars. He brought two packs of cigars for our party-goers to try, and spoke to us about the experiences (amazing!) of starting his own cigar brand.

whiskeys

There were fantastic whiskeys to try from Stitzel Weller Distillery in Kentucky – Blade & Bow, I.W. Harper & Forged Oak Orphan Barrel 15 Year. They blew us away!

Guests enjoyed this scrumptious menu:

Whiskey Grilled Kentucky Baby Back Ribs

Southern Fried Chicken

BBQ Beans

Coleslaw

Watermelon, Feta, and Red Onion Salad

Corn Bread

Walnut Brownies

Iron Horse Vineyards Winemaker Dinner 2.18.16

IMG_7032

On Thursday, February 18th, The City Club welcomed Joy Sterling, CEO of Iron Horse Vineyards, who hosted our first Winemaker Dinner of the year. What a special evening! The aptly named Joy is not just a tireless Ambassador for the brand, but has an infectious enthusiasm for the products her family produces, and appreciates the ability that a wonderful glass of wine – sparkling or still – has to bring people together.

Iron Horse is one of Sonoma County’s most beautiful, small, independent, estate, family-owned wineries. A pioneer in the Green Valley appellation within the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, the Iron Horse family is building a legacy of prestige sparkling wines and estate bottled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Iron Horse’s renowned Sparkling Wines have been served at the White House for five consecutive Presidential Administrations, beginning with the historic Reagan-Gorbachev Summit Meetings ending the Cold War

It’s for the Kids! SF Firefighters Toy Program Kick-off Party

Toy drive 5 (2)

Every year, The City Club proudly participates in the Annual San Francisco Firefighters Toy program – one of our favorite holiday traditions!

On November 12th we hosted our member dinner and auction to benefit this wonderful program and raised over $15,000 in donations and toys. WOW, do we have some generous Members or what?

Toy Drive 2

The San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program believes that no child should be without a toy during the holiday season. In time of loss due to fire, our firefighters are the ones who see first-hand, the devastation when a child is left without a favorite toy. Donations of toys are graciously accepted throughout the year at any San Francisco firehouse, or here at The City Club during the month of December.

toy drive (2)

Attending an event this holiday season at The City Club? We welcome any and all new gifts to add to the collection bin on the 10th floor. Thank you for joining us in making spirits bright for local children!

About the program:

The San Francisco Firefighter’s Toy Program is the city’s largest and the nation’s oldest program of its kind. Since 1949, it has evolved from a few firefighters repairing broken toys and bikes for 15 families to, in 2013, 300 firefighters and friends volunteering their time to distribute over 200,000 toys to more than 40,000 disadvantaged children. Besides helping individual families in need, the Toy Program serves many community organizations, including shelters for abused women and children, inner-city schools, children’s cancer wards, and pediatric AIDS units. We also respond on a year round basis to displaced children who become victims of fires, floods and other such disasters.

May Flowers

IMG_1882 IMG_1847 (2)

We haven’t been receiving much rain in San Francisco but that hasn’t stopped our local florist from sourcing the most beautiful stems to produce gorgeous arrangements!

Here at The City Club our centerpieces are nothing short of amazing whether you want to go with something as simple as an Orchid with some greenery and Manzanita Branches or an arrangement that is more elaborate with a variety of flowers, our in house florist Ricardo Ramirez Floral Design does it all.

IMG_1879 IMG_1842 (2)

As always, you’re welcome to use your preferred florist for any events at the Club, and we are happy to share Ricardo’s contact information with you if you are looking for something extra special and complementary to our decor.

Stop and admire on your next visit to the Club!

Mothers Day Brunch 5.10.15

MD flowers

City Club Members came together on Sunday, May 10 to celebrate Mom!

Mothers & Grandmothers, Kids & Grandkids, Dads, Grandfathers, and extended families all made their way to our spectacular buffet.

Executive Chef Munoz really went all out and created a thing of beauty that had some of everything – and more! From Fluffy Pancakes with Strawberry Compote & Whipped Cream, to Roast Leg of Lamb, an extravagant Caviar Bar and more Tortes, Pies & Cakes than should be legal in one place – it was a showstopper!

All that and a String Quartet to set the mood. A really lovely way to celebrate Mom!  If you didn’t make it this year, please come and join us next year.
